Unpacking… resilience

Indicator:8000 smallholder farmers from Kasaï adopt 3 new adaptive responses to face climate-change related shocks and stressors after two years of accompaniment
Step 1: Identify the key concepts of the indicator

8000 smallholder farmers from Kasaï (DRC) adopt 3 new adaptive responses to face climate-change related shocks and stressors after two years of accompaniment

  • smallholder farmers
  • adaptive responses
  • climate-change related shocks and stressors

Step 2: Define the key concepts of the indicator

Smallholder farmers: Farmers who own less than 5 hectars of land

Adaptive responses: Refer to the proactive and informed responses taken by individuals, households, communities and higher-level systems to adapt to longer-term trends and changing conditions in order to minimize negative consequences of stressors and shocks, or to exploit positive opportunities.

Shocks: External short-term deviations from long-term trends that have substantial negative effects on people’s current state of well-being, level of assets, livelihoods, or safety, or their ability to withstand future shocks.

Stressors: Long-term trends or pressures that undermine the stability of a system and increase vulnerability within it.

Now, we continue unpacking each key concept.

Adaptive responses:

  • Agriculture and agribusiness
  • Urban gardening / backyard gardening
  • Harvest water
  • Use improved seeds
  • Agriculture intensification
  • Increase or decrease of agriculture production areas
  • Increase the area under livestock
  • Plant new crops or raise new animal species / diversify agriculture production
  • Add value to primary production
  • Develop new products with value added
  • Engage in collective marketing or new markets
  • Seek new markets
  • Develop new agribusiness activities / agro-entrepreneurial initiatives
  • Diversify to non-agriculture activities
  • Get off-farm paid employment

Climate change related shocks and stressors:

• Unpredictable or erratic rainfall

• Drought

• Flood

• Strong winds

• Heat wave

• Fire
