Organizational development approaches

For support and accompaniment of Partner Organizations’ organizational development processes, the following recommendations might be considered for discussion.

Design a portfolio of interventions

Design a portfolio of possible types of interventions (training for PO leadership, training for the whole team, team building, specific DO change processes, etc.) and integrate these into the BMZ projects as part of civil society’s capacity building strategy.

Based on the participants’ feedback, the following interventions could be considered:

  • Regional basic trainings for terre des hommes staff about organizational development.
  • Global exchanges among terre des hommes Germany colleagues.
  • Online-trainings – ideally combined with a kick-off training at the beginning and a final workshop in presence – for POs

Trainings could be organized in the following way :

(1) Basic training during 6 to 9 months according to the frequency of the session (twice a month for 3 hours or once a month 6 hours) with practical application with the design of an organizational development strategy elaborated by each organization. Three participants from each organization might guarantee a sustainable implementation of the training outputs.

(2) Tailor-made support and accompaniment to implement these OD strategies.

(3) Needs- and demands driven in-depth trainings about specific topics (i.e. communication, leadership, organizational structure, results-based approach, intergenerational conflicts, organizational sustainability and resilience, etc.) and follow-up accompaniment and support.

Time frames

The support of PO’s organizational development processes should consider the different time frames needed. Broader changes regarding the organizational culture require up to 6-7 years.

For example, embedding the results-based approach needs 3-4 years to be addressed considering the 7 essential organizational elements and a follow-up phase to guarantee that it becomes part of daily organizational practices.

More specific aspects could follow the 180 days Open Space Beta approach and very concrete practices could be consciously integrated and/or reinforced during 21 days-intervals. While designing a broader organizational development process, the different types and time frames should be present to enable the celebration of smaller steps and advances towards more sustainable organizations.

The following presentation gives you an overview on different organizational development approaches that can be combined or emphasized according to the needs of each organization.
